The USS West Virginia is coming to World of Warships and this is a preview of her. However, it’s not a traditional preview. This is a rebuke of the ship, which is not the ship we would all expect, given her accomplishments in World War II. Instead of the 1944 version, we are getting the antiquated A hull Colorado version.

  1. Remember when HMS Warspite was amazing because of it’s 15″guns at Tier 6?
It’s been getting power creeped hard and WV at T6 is just the latest culprit. Warspite is no longer as sturdy as she should be, nor does she hit as hard compared to some of her competitors.

    • Elmarby meh she has better shells still the. The queen mustu and Old A hull Colorado and is still more accurate.

  2. Funny how WG continually gives the US WWI era ships, while Russia gets 1950-60’s paper pipe dreams that they couldn’t even build today…

    • EternalFlameSolarFlare

i agree completely… dont worry tho. we will probably get that sweet Russian BB line soon XD

    • yea and still waiting for the North Carolina/Alabama to get the FKING secondary guns to perform like they should, not this piss ant nonsense they handicapped them down too.

    • Same shit as WOT. The Russian tech tree is by far the biggest in game and has the most powerful tanks in game by numbers because of the sheer volume of fucking tanks that nation has. Russian bias is real.

    • Sir Raint, Knight of Silverwing

To be fair, US really built a crap ton of ships with only Phoenix, Buffalo, and Montana remained on papers. Russian line is just like the Soviet jokes. And the line would only consist few ships that would be similar to the current Italian line.

  3. Its pretty logic what they did… A upgraded Colorado cannot be placed at tier 8. With 22 knots speed and the armor layout it will be obliterated even by tier 9/10 cruisers…

    • Evan, Yes, movement does matter, even for battleships, movement allows you to get into and out of a position. Not fun going to one side, and find out you are needed elsewhere, also not fun doing nothing but pot shots because your team broke that flank before even getting there. being 10 kts slower than everything else only hurts you and promotes more campers.

Yea, so lets make it easier for those HE spammers to kill you right? Speed got me out of more situations than I can count on a BB. Only way to help it against spammers is giving it 12-13k detection, but again, the speed only makes it able to hide, because you need speed to use that kind of detection effectively, plus you want to shoot constently if you want to do damage.

    • The counterargument is that tier 10 battles are so slow and static that the 22kts would fit right in there.

    • Already explained why it isn’t. Most T10 battles I’ve play (T8-10), things get fast quick, and if you can’t react fast enough the game is lost.

    • Wg could change the speed to any speed they need to. They changed 21kt French BB’s to 27kt Battlecruisers (Normandie, and Lyon).

    • The Normandie we got is a version the french claimed could go 28kts, and the Lyon is a paper refitted version. WV never had an engine upgrade, and if they gave it one, it would make it better than the Colo.

That moment when WG announced those ships the community wanted since the beginning of time and they are disappointing.
    This ship and Vanguard.
    :superultrahyperlul:

    • Just_Some_Random_Tryhard_Gamer

Vanguard is half-way there imo. All it needs is Monarch reload, 2.0 Sigma faster warspite turret traverse and maybe lowered citadel.
I mean Vanguard is the only other British Battleship other than Warspite that’s AP based and does not have that crappy RN gimmick of lowered Krupp values and fast-fuse AP – which basically shafted the AP of the entire RN tech tree – leaving them as border humping, long range HE spamming bbs.

  5. Geoff the Ironwolf

Problem is WV at Leytey is too powerful at tier 7 and too weak at tier 8.

    • The 8×1 127mm/25 AA battery is hilariously underpowered these days at T7, with just 58 DPS at 4.2km. Let’s take a look at some of the more recent additions’ AA suites. Lyon’s 130mm DP guns provide 83 DPS at 5.2km, Scharn’s/A Hull Gneisenau’s 105mm DP guns provide 116 DPS at 4.5km, Gneis B Hull’s 128mm DP guns provide 136 DPS at 5.2km. Some T6 ships also eclipse the 8×1 127mm/25 suite, like QE’s 114mm DP guns providing 89 DPS at 5km, Bayern’s 105mm DP guns providing 100 DPS at 4.5km, or Prinz Eitel Friedrich’s 136 DPS at 4.5km.

    • Geoff the Ironwolf

+OG_Propaganda PDX who said anything about radar on WV?

    • Josy Naemi Köhler

Give it normal heal, worse sigma, terrible acceleration, and 20.0 knots topspeed. then it is good against carriers, bad against everything else.

She got wider, heavier, but kept her old engines. So she being even slower would be very plausible. While Sigma and Heal are just balancing factors.

  6. Wait, so it was ok when Japanese tree kept getting shitty, nerfed, interwar versions of WWII ships, but it is unacceptable when it happens to the US tree once?

I’d like to see the same fervour when it comes to other nations and their shitty premium ships too Zoup. Some consistency will be appreciated.

    • Literally no one wanted Mutsu or Ashitaka, no one, everyone told WG ‘Fuck off give Tone you cunt’ and WG was like ‘lol >community’

    • Francisco DeTonne

No one even *expected* Mutsu or Ashitaka. Mutsu maybe, Ashitaka is a no-no because Amagi-class was *unfinished* .

“so it was ok when Japanese tree kept getting shitty, nerfed, interwar versions of WWII ships”
It was *never* ok to begin with. Barely anyone, *even in Asia server* , ever plays those two ships.

    • Amagi was at least _started_ before being selected for conversion to a carrier due to the Washington treaty and, more to the point, having her incomplete hull wrecked beyond useful repair in the 1923 Kanto earthquake. Even if she’d stayed a BB, she would likely never have seen combat.

    • Just_Some_Random_Tryhard_Gamer

A-shit-taka aka Stock A-Hull Amagi was the last thing IJN wanted or even thought of. Putting that infamous Amagi A-Hull as a premium ship with a price tag on it – with wg knowing full well it was one of the worst ships to grind on the entire IJN BB line
was probs one of the biggest fuck you to IJN. I simply won’t stand to watch USN to also go through that crap.

  7. I saw the thumbnail and read “Not my Volkswagen”

  8. I’m sorry, i realize what you are trying to say, but it just comes across like you’re
throwing a tantrum. Its not what you are saying and I don’t mean it as an insult, its the way you are saying it. I spent most of this thinking, okay he’s pissed off. Why? Then waiting for your reasoning, and then more waiting.

For all its history, the version of the WV you want was very outdated. You can fix the armor, you can fix the speed, you can fix the gun and you can fix the accuracy. But you cannot fix the speed. A T8 WV would be so slow it would be all but useless in any game she was in. She can’t keep up and by the time she got in useful, more modern ships would have sent her to the bottom.

I would rather have her at a T6 from the most dramatic part of her history and be something I can use, than a waste of space taking up a port slot that could be used for a ship I would actually Sail.

There are real reason why this ship is as it is in game. But, as your said yourself “I don’t care why” and that is just a level of arrogance I need from someone trying to be an informed source. I enjoy your content and I understand its not what you wanted.

    • Make it an award ship instead, place it at T7, with one less heal or limited DCP. How OP can it really be? T8 AA at T7, who really cares, look at Texas, better than NY in almost every way.

    • To be fair the tier 6 and 7 BBs were never designed to go as fast as they Go in game they were also supposed to 21-23 knot ships aswell but they 28 or so.

    • New Mexico and Colorado (Tiers VI and VII) are 21 knot ships in game currently. They are just as slow when up-tiered as people are saying the West Virginia will be if left in the 1944 configuration…but I don’t hear anyone saying that shouldn’t be the case. US Standard Battleships are slow. Deal with it. They ought to have much better main battery accuracy to compensate.

Make West Virginia at tier VII premium with better AA. This isn’t hard. You could even make it tier VIII, and the history brigade would still buy it.

Make Maryland a tier VI premium with the 16in guns to chase the non-history market.

    • dclark142002 yeah but they arnt even alll that accurate really. And they buff the speed of sold of other ships that didn’t push 23 knots. But who knows.

  9. That is WG for you.Glorifying the Stalin who never saw action and making it OP, but ignoring real war history and insulting the US navy.

    • So you are saying this version of the ship never existed? This is the version people fought and died for in the ships most intense moments.

  10. If i wanted a Hull A Colorado I would never have upgraded the one i have. Wow has one Choice with me fix the west Virginia. Or I’ll stop purchasing stuff in the Premium shop.

  11. My favorite BB on BB battle is the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Washington vs. Kirishima. Still want to see Washington in game.

    • Kirishima as well…im not counting the arpeggio because wg didnt even attempted to model actual kirishima but just slapped those horrid neons on kongo (which is Hiei actually) and called it a day

    • I suppose the South Dakota also deserves a shout-out. Had it not been for her positioning, Washington may not have gotten into position to shoot Kirishima. Gotta give credit where it’s due.

  12. Im a Brit living in Ireland and I even say they need to put Moderized WV into the game instead of or along side this version. I have a few West Virginian friends and they agree with you too. Heck one of my friends just got married and moved away from WV but was so happy hearing they would add WV to the game that it helped her get over her home sickness, but now shes is just left disapointed and angry.

    • This is the version that fought and died in Pearl Harbor and she’s angry?

    • Shes angry that its not the best version, to be clear she doesnt hate this version she just would preffer the refloated and modernized version. She even said she would buy BOTH if they where available but not puting WV at her best will make her not buy it at all. I mean if they put the Boise in in two of her variations then why not the WV?

    • Wargaming just said on devblog shes going to be available as BOTH versions this version will be soon and the Modernized Version later on

  13. Another angle to approach this from is to compare it to the other T6 US premium BB, the Arizona…how does WG plan to differentiate the WV from her without making her OP at T6? I already have Arizona, why would I spend another $50 on this? Sure, it’s got 16″ guns, but if the treatment that Mutsu got is any indication, then no thanks and no sale.

    • It would probably be similar to the options on Conqueror or Mogami, where the number of guns is traded for caliber.

  14. How do you think us Brits feel about that dogshit Vanguard they are bringing out?

  15. I too am a Naval History buff and am also ex Navy. I just dont get all the drama about this. Everyone has got so entitled lately it seems that WG cant do anything right by anyone. Personly I think it’s exactly where it needs to be and was a good compromise to get her in the game. The upgraded WV would be an awful tier 8 and everyone would scream about how bad it sucked and dont buy videos would pour in. At best it would be like the meh Tiger position in WoT. I rather have an early haul version and it be decent at tier 7 then to have an upgraded tier 7 at tier 8 going toe to toe with tier 10s or have some crazy MM caps because they already know it sucks. It was a great ship in that era and a great ship at end of WWII. I dont see the big deal here. Other examples exist on choices like this such as the German tier 7 BBs. There are bigger issues I rather they spend their time on then a redesign of a ship to make it WORSE at a higher tier just to appease a vocal minority.

    • Thomas, vocal minorities are what drive WG to make changes. And frankly, I’m not so sure that there’s a majority that doesn’t want this change either. I think that if there’s a majority on this issue, it a majority that just doesn’t care one way or the other, or isn’t even aware that this is an issue at all.

  16. I can feel your passion brother!

  17. Wargaming just said on devblog shes going to be available as BOTH versions

  18. Apologies ahead of time for what is about to be a rather long comment…

There are two problems I have with this ship specifically, game play aspect and historical aspect.

As far as game issues go for me, I already have a handful of T6 battleships, and this thing coming along doesn’t exactly make me happy with it’s main armament stats. I would have to buy it to be on the same level of reload and turret traverse, etc. Also, at T7 I do enjoy my Colorado but it still is a very weak T7 so I don’t understand their justification for not giving us the refit version for “balancing issues”. To top it off, I’m tired of cookie cutter premiums. I buy premiums because I want to support the game and the Devs who brought it to us, but you really need to earn my money first.

Now to the history, I’m a history nerd on a lot of things and WWII is probably the focal point for me. I am also a West VIrginian. I have met a handful of sailors who served on the ship, as well as representing the state of West Virginia and the ship and her crew at the 75th anniversary parade of the bombing at Pearl Harbor. I have talked to many veterans of both that ship and her sisters as well as a few of the Japanese pilots who attacked on that day. While giving us a USS West Virginia is incredible, the refit version really does sum up a lot of what the US as a whole and the spirit of the people here stand for. So while it may just be a ship in a video game, I just can’t help like i’m being insulted just a little bit.

  19. mynameiswritinwater

haven’t laughed this hard since they claimed they “nerfed” the Stalingrad…. after all since they put in a refurbished New York as Texas (not only far more AA, but also changed gun angles on turrets – so there was some actual change on the ship model) like 6 months since the game being was gold ? Or having different shaped Omahas (Murmansk/Marblehead) straight fron the start ? Oh yeah… priceless comedy on the Dev blog. Although I would agree a WV would be uselss at Tier VIII, and immediately make the Colorado obsolete at Tier VII

  20. Then why put in the “41” version? If you need another premium call it Maryland. She was at Pearl Harbor as well. She received only minor damage and went through the war mostly unchanged. Just call it Maryland and save the West Virginia until you have an acceptable model.
